Almost got to taste a pipe gate...

Went to the farm on Thursday to ride. It was a normal ride, until we got to fencing. We've been working with Chicky's tendency to run off while fencing (with me, not so much with her trainer) and making some progress. Our first few passes were stellar. Then things went to hell.

We had a nice, controlled run down and were doing quite good. When we got to the end, Chicky just lost her footing and her front legs sort of buckled under us. Her neck and shoulders went to the right and down, and suddenly I was looking the top bar of the pipe fence right in the eye, so to speak. Instinctively, I reached out with both arms to grab the top rail, hoping to hold myself off of the gate as we went down or at the least, shove myself in a better position to I wouldn't get clothes lined. Things went into slow motion as both hands grabbed the gate, and I moved my head to see what the odds were of Chicky getting hung up on the fence. Thankfully for both of us, Chicky sorted things out on her own, and stood back up in place. I let go of the gate, and grabbed the reins in case she ran off or shied. We took a quick moment, turned around, and did a nice stop on the other end - all the while my hands were shaking.

After that, the next time we ran down, she took off at a dead run. We worked through it a bit until I found a nice stopping spot. As soon as she stopped nicely and let me rate her run down, I got off.

I think both of us had enough for the night.
